Winslow (140 lb. German Shepherd x St. Bernard) x Miss Honey (140 lb. Kangal-Anatolian Shepherd)

Winslow & Miss Honey, May 10, 2023 Litter:

Our 140 lb. female Kangal-Anatolian Shepherd Mix - "Miss Honey" - is an excellent All-Purpose Working Farm Dog and Livestock Guard Dog who excels at laying around watching free-range chickens. She barks only when there are actually predators lurking around or if there is a cow loose in her free-range chicken area. She is highly trainable, has great manners, obedience, athletic ability, and is gentle with children and small animals. She is also willing to join in with our other multi-purpose working farm dogs in moving cattle when asked to do so. Honey has the typical, all-weather protective (high-shedding) Anatolian coat.

Our 140 lb. German Shepherd x St. Bernard male - "Winslow" - Winslow is an enthusiastic and obedient multi-purpose worker on our farm. He is always by your side ready to help with herding cattle and learning to put his teeth to work killing predators. He is big, strong, and energetic yet cuddly and eager to please.

Winslow is learning to herd and hold cattle in place on command. Quick to learn flock-protection, he was trustworthy around even the smallest chicks from his first days in the yard.

He loves to roam his yard, play with our other dogs, and use his keen nose to smell for any intruders, only barks in the night when livestock are loose. If allowed, he would spend his days tracking and running down foxes and coyotes, he requires a vibrating e-collar to prevent him from galavanting into the woods. (We expect all young dogs to need control measures to prevent wandering until 3 years of age.)

Winslow is the type who NEEDS a job and plenty of exercise. Winslow is affectionate, polite, and very obedient.

Winslow loves to learn about herding but never herds without instruction. He is protective and will not tolerate cattle bullying at the gates. He has been friendly and open to every human visitor, truly just the warmest, most gentlemanly escort of friends and guests.

Winslow is trustworthy, safe, and loves to be around children, livestock, chickens and chicks, cats, other dogs, and guests.

Winslow’s coat is divine - silky soft and gleaming, on the long side but easy to maintain. He loves to be outdoors full-time/year round (with shelter and straw bedding for winter weather). He requires a quick brush-out in the spring and is done shedding for the year.

Both dogs are very polite and obedient. Both dogs are capable of herding as well as guarding livestock and other farm assets (crops, structures, and equipment). Both dogs are trustworthy and safe around children, livestock, chickens and chicks, cats, other dogs, and guests.

Winslow and Honey have coats that are easy to maintain yet suitable for being outdoors full-time/year round (with a shelter and thin blanket in nasty winter weather). We allow them to be inside during severe winter weather and/or to have a periodic warm-up by the fire in the early morning (before the henhouses are opened). They require only a couple of quick brush-outs in the spring and they're done for the year.

Any pup from this litter should make an excellent multi-purpose, Working Farm Dog and farm asset protector (livestock, crops, or buildings and equipment) with hybrid smarts and vigor! Both of these dogs are huge and the photos rarely do their size much justice.

Miss Honey and Winslow are beloved working dogs in the best of homes, enjoying more freedom and independence than most modern dogs will ever know. We make a point of raising our pups in a loving, supportive environment. Puppies are never reprimanded except if they are expressing undesirable interest in our poultry, they are praised for good behavior several times per day. They come when called, sit patiently at your feet, and are all affectionate and outgoing. They are already out and about in the yard, learning to avoid cattle and socializing with our laying flock. Our children play and interact with them several times per day and we all just love snuggling them in the tall grass!

Call and we'll add you to our list of interested parties and help you pick out a pup for your needs whether it's a high-energy predator assassin or a free-range chicken guarding lounge potato.

Weekly Updates (videos are from our 2021 litter, will be replaced with new links as videos are created):

Week 1

Week 1 Update - Miss Honey selected and prepared the basement of our small barn as her den, delivered 9 beautiful, healthy puppies on May 9-10! All puppies seem to be more or less the same size, were delivered over a 24-hr period. Miss Honey is doing great!

Week 2

Week 2 Update - We began to rotate the biggest/earliest born puppies away for a few hours every day to give some of the smaller/later delivery puppies opportunity for longer feeding sessions.

Week 2

Week 3 Update - The puppies are starting to grow longer coats, we can see that many of them will be quite fluffy (like Winslow). They have just started to show a real interest in solid food. They are still nursing quite a bit and sharing Miss Honey's ration: 12 cups of Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy (Lamb & Rice) as well as 18 raw eggs and two gallons of fresh milk per day.

Week 2

Week 4 Update - All the puppies have great appetites and are still nursing a bit. It looks like all of the females and the fawn agouti male will be medium-long coated.

Week 2

Week 5 Update - Puppies are still nursing and eating a ton of kibble, plus raw eggs and fresh milk. They are growing well and competiting for attention. They really trip us up and force us to play with them!

Week 5

Week Five & Six Video Update - This week I created a short photo montage of the puppies and parents. All of the puppies are very playful and outgoing, they all love to come running when called and get some snuggles, kisses, and scratches. They are all so fat this week!

Week 2

Week 7 Update - These puppies are eating loads and loads of "Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice Formula", sometimes soaked in fresh cow milk and eggs, more often with milk served afterward. The puppies have all been so well-behaved and obedient at milking time; I'm not sure but they may already be learning "stay" and "go lay down" as everyone in the pack is taught to stand back, not crowd the cows, and be patient at milking time.

Week 2

Week 8 Update - Veterinary appointment for health check and vaccination on 7/7/2023 went according to plan, the puppies are all enormous and absolutely filled the exam room. They have had deworming (pyrantel paomate) and flea prevention (advantus imidacloprid chewable). All puppies are doing well, they are all clever, sweet, rowdy, outgoing, and affectionate. The litter seems to be mostly stock oriented (preferring to lay with stock all day) versus people oriented (prefering to wait on the porch for the action to begin), this may have to do with Honey delivering in the barn this time vs. on the porch. All of the puppies are behaving themselves around the fowl but they are about to enter into a more atheletic period where interest in playing with fowl needs to be carefully monitored.

Week 9

Week 9 Update - First-Come-First-Served Puppy Selection has begun ~ call us anytime for an appointment!

Week 10

Week 10 Update - Puppies are all doing great, require some supervision around chickens as the birds flutter down from roosts in the early morning but otherwise all are angels.

Week 11

Week 11 Update - These puppies are getting enormous!

Week 11

Week 12 Update - The puppies are all eating well and growing into dogs, at times they already seem as big as their mom.

Week 11

Week 13 Update - Sometimes I feel sad that I made so few videos this time. It's been raining every single day and these big puppies are a mud wrestling team!

Week 11

Week 14 Update - Another big, sweet female puppy spoken for and sent to her new home!

Week 11

FOUR MONTH UPDATE - The puppies went on a little field-trip to the lake... Two of the females love to swim, all others love to wade and splash in the shallows. We are in the process of adjusting pricing and naming the puppies for training purposes. Pricing will reflect which pups we have an eye on for guarding our expanding laying flock and the "look" we want for our B&B guests. The higher prices reflect nothing more than early aptitude for guardianship and our personal preferences. All of the females are comparable in size, conformation, and training thus far.

How We Handle Puppy Selection:

- We're keeping notes re: which pups are most active/sedentary, loyal/independent, etc. so that you can make the best choice for your needs, please check back here weekly for updates in puppy pics/information.
- Weekly updates/photos/video notification and quick links are available via email to anyone who has expressed interest.
- The remaining puppies are available for $1,000/puppy due upon pickup.
- Please bring cash, we will not accept checks for in-person puppy retrieval, sorry for the inconvenience.
- We offer in-person visits because of the abundance of puppy scammers out there (many are not comfortable to pay deposits and/or cannot afford to be scammed).
- If you are traveling we would love to host you at our Inn! We usually have a two-night minimum but we make exception for puppy customers.
- Afternoon appointments work best for us with B&B hosting; we can answer any questions and/or give you some space to play with the puppies and privacy to make your decision as we do a little yard work.

Consider booking a stay in our historic victorian farmhouse to see your puppy in person.
