~ Lakeside Farm Anatolian Shepherd Mix Working Farm Dogs ~

June 27, 2021 Litter

Ben (120 lb. German Shepherd x St. Bernard) x Miss Honey (120 lb. Kangal-Anatolian Shepherd)

Ben & Honey, June 2021 Litter:

Our 120 lb. female Kangal-Anatolian Shepherd Mix - "Miss Honey" - is an excellent All-Purpose Working Farm Dog and Livestock Guard Dog who excels at laying around watching free-range chickens. She barks only when there are actually predators lurking around or if there is a cow loose in her free-range chicken area. She is highly trainable, has great manners, obedience, athletic ability, and is gentle with children and small animals. She is also willing to join in with our other multi-purpose working farm dogs in moving cattle when asked to do so.
Our 120 lb. German Shepherd x St. Bernard male - "Ben" - is often mistaken for an Anatolian Shepherd. Ben is also an excellent All-Purpose Working Farm Dog. He excels at any job requiring raw speed, strength, and quick obedience. Ben is excellent at herding and holding cattle back away from the gates during feeding time. Ben is fast and ready to put his teeth to work but is 100% trustworthy around even the smallest chicks. He prefers to be close to his human family and spring to action if another watch dog sounds the alarm. Ben has the best nose of any dog I've ever owned. He is a lightning fast set of powerful teeth who streaks off after any predator he detects while Miss Honey sticks closer to henhouses to guard the livestock. He has excellent manners and obedience and rarely barks in the night - we think he would kill predators without making a peep but we have another male here who is an incurable barker (a rough collie).
Ben is the type who NEEDS a job close to home and plenty of exercise, Miss Honey is more laid back and will keep herself on any spot you tell her to as a predator deterrent and first line of defense.
Both dogs are very polite and obedient. Both dogs stay home with minimal (woven-wire, road-frontage) fencing. Both dogs are capable of herding as well as guarding livestock and other farm assets (crops, structures, and equipment). Both dogs are trustworthy and safe around children, livestock, chickens and chicks, cats, other dogs, and guests.
Both Ben and Honey have coats that are easy to maintain yet suitable for being outdoors full-time/year round (with a shelter and thin blanket in nasty winter weather). We allow them to be inside during severe winter weather and/or to have a periodic warm-up by the fire in the early morning (before the henhouses are opened). They require only a couple of quick brush-outs in the spring and they're done for the year.
Any pup from this litter should make an excellent multi-purpose, Working Farm Dog and farm asset protector (livestock, crops, or buildings and equipment) with hybrid smarts and vigor! Both of these dogs are huge and the photos rarely do their size much justice. Before Miss Honey had delivered the pups and lost a bit of weight she was the bigger of the two.
Call and we'll add you to our list of interested parties and help you pick out a pup for your needs whether it's a high-energy predator assassin or a free-range chicken guarding lounge potato.

Weekly Video Updates:

Week Five Photo & Video Update - This week I created a short photo montage of the puppies and parents in action. All of the puppies are very playful and outgoing, they all love to come running when called and get some snuggles or some scratches.

Week Six Photo & Video Update - Another short photo montage of the puppies. All of the puppies are very playful and outgoing, they rush your legs so quickly now that they'll send you flying and then chew you and lick you to death once you've fallen down!

Week Seven Photo & Video Update - Another short photo montage of the puppies - just when we thought they couldn't get any cuter! They are eating loads and loads of "Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice Formula" soaked in fresh cow milk and eggs. They have their veterinary appointment for health check and vaccination on 7/23.

Week 8 Update - The puppies had their veterinary appointment for health check and vaccination (Distemper/Parvo/6-in-1) on 7/23. The health check was great although a few of the puppies have hot spots where they have been biting and wrestling with each other and the gnats are pestering and enlarging their wounds. I have been using Blu-Kote, which is working well but will stain clothing and other fabrics. The puppies have been very muddy in wet weather, so it may be a good idea to bring a few old towels when you come to pick up your puppy, in case he/she needs a little bath and drying off before travel, and dry towel(s) to lay on for the ride home. Puppies have not had deworming or flea and tick medication yet, we expect to administer those in the coming week. They are all very friendly but independent. All are eating on their own - I have not seen any of them nursing at all in several days. I thought by now there would be some who were just dying to lounge around on the porch but each of them finds a cool place to lay in the yard near or under the hen houses. So far, there have been no issues with them chasing or grabbing chickens beyond a couple of brief reprimands, but their interest is growing. The puppies begin to wonder if chickens might like to play, be chased, and chewed on. I take them their meals 4-6 times per day and they come running and barking from every shady place, they eat and play for awhile with each other and then they go back to sleep.

Week Nine Photo & Video Update - puppies have had deworming (pyrantel paomate) and flea prevention (advantus imidacloprid chewable). All puppies are doing well, they are all clever, sweet, rowdy, outgoing, and affectionate. The litter seems to be split about 50-50 between stock oriented (preferring to lay with stock all day) versus people oriented (prefering to wait on the porch for the action to begin). All of the puppies are more or less behaving themselves around the fowl but they are about to enter into a more atheletic period where roughhousing and involving birds in rough play needs to be carefully monitored. We can't wait to meet thier new families this weekend!

Week Ten Photo & Video Update - On Thursday and Friday it became apparent that the puppies were having an itch explosion. Puppy selection went ahead more or less as planned except that just two puppies went home and the rest got some additional medication from Ticonderoga Animal Hospital. The best guess at this point is that the puppies contracted mange (mites) shortly after Ben and Honey killed a fox in the basement of our small barn. All adult dogs and 9 puppies were treated with chewables promised to start to work within 2 hours. The puppies were treated with "Simparica Trio" (24mg sarolaner, .48mg moxidectin, 100mg pyrantel). I also picked up a bottle of Durvet Permethrin 10% at Tractor Supply. I mixed that 50/50 with water in a small jar and painted it on all the scabs, wounds, and bumps I could find. The Veterinarian's recommendation was to watch the situation for another week before sending any additional puppies out and that all of the puppies should have two more chewables (one each for the next two months), if not continuously (as many pet owners choose to do); we will purchase those and mail them out or send them along.

Week Eleven Photo &Video Update - The puppies are all doing MUCH better - still a few spots but with the permethrin right here I quickly apply that to anything that they've been scratching or chewing. The itch is definitely slowing down, and is completely gone on a few of the puppies. I plan to allow everyone to take puppies home whenever they prefer. Hopefully everyone has had a chance to get any adult dogs on a broad spectrum parasite control that works for mange. If not, at least there has been plenty of warning to gather supplies and keep watching for any itchy spots. In the past we've had good success with keeping any small spots treated to prevent the spread. The puppies all "got skinny" - they have grown much taller and lankier.

Ben Tribute Video - In November 2021 we tragically lost our beloved Ben.

Picking a Puppy:

- We're keeping notes re: which pups are most active/sedentary, loyal/independent, etc. so that you can make the best choice for your needs, please check back here for any updates in puppy pics/information.
- Weekly updates/photos/video links are emailed to anyone who has expressed interest.
- We don't take deposits until specific pups are healthy, selected (preferably in-person), and requested held after the first round of appointments to meet pups, beginning when the pups are ten weeks old.
- Interested persons should call or email to make an appointment to meet puppies (and take a puppy home) beginning on 9/5 or plan to pay $150 deposit on 9/7 (via paypal) and we will hold your pup for up to four weeks.
- For this litter, the first choice of puppies will go to those who are here to select a puppy in person on 9/5-9/7. The puppies will be ten weeks old at that time and can go home on the day they are selected or be held for you until 12-14 weeks of age.
- Please bring cash, we will not accept checks for in-person puppy retrieval, sorry for the inconvenience.
- We offer in-person visits because of the abundance of puppy scammers out there (many are not comfortable to pay deposits and/or cannot afford to be scammed).
- Those who are taking time to travel/make an appointment will have first choice of pups when they arrive.
- After the first round of puppy selection/retrieval/deposits for the June 2021 litter (9/5-9/7), I'll update this page with photos and information most pertinent to any remaining puppies and those will also be available on a first-come/deposit, first-served basis. Any deposits will be good for holding a puppy for up to four weeks (or until 14 weeks of age).
- Afternoon appointments work best for us with B&B hosting; we can answer any questions and/or give you some space to play with the puppies and privacy to make your decision as we do a little yard work.
